Your Skin Has Already Met Tallow

Tallow is having a moment, apparently.

It is all over social media. It is in the kind of skincare videos where somebody holds up a tiny jar and says they are never going back. It is being treated like a surprising new discovery, even though people have been using animal fats on skin for a very long time.

Tallow is not new.

What is new is how far skincare drifted away from ingredients that are simple enough to explain without needing a glossary.

Your skin already has its own natural mix of oils and lipids. That is part of what helps it feel comfortable, soft, and protected from the outside world. Tallow is also made of fatty acids, which is one reason it feels different from a lot of lightweight, water-based products.

It is rich. It is simple. And it does not disappear the second you put it on.

That does not mean every other skincare product is bad.

I am not here to tell you to throw away every serum you own, set fire to your bathroom cabinet, and move into the woods with a jar of tallow.

Some products are great. Some people love a whole routine. Some people genuinely enjoy the tiny gold spoon that comes with an expensive eye cream. Live your life.

But there is something nice about an ingredient that does not ask you to become an expert before you use it.

Tallow is fat.

When it is rendered carefully, it becomes a smooth, rich base for a balm. Its job is not to change your face overnight or make you look like a completely different person by next Thursday.

Its job is to make skin feel moisturized, soft, and comfortable.

That is enough.

That simplicity is part of the appeal.

It is not flashy. It does not have a long ingredient name. It does not need to promise a new version of you.

It just works beautifully in a balm.

At Bare, we start with beef suet from Brenneman Farms in Jay County, Indiana, then dry-render it into the tallow that goes into our products.

That process matters. The farm matters. The way the animals are raised matters. But the final experience should still feel simple.

You open the jar.

You warm a little between your fingers.

You put it on your skin.

And then you get on with your day.

No twenty-minute tutorial. No waiting for five layers to dry. No wondering whether you used the right product in the wrong order.

Just a good ingredient, handled carefully, made into something useful.

Your skin has already met tallow.

It just may not have known its name.
