What Even Is Suet?

What Even Is Suet?

If you have ever looked at "beef suet" on an ingredient list and thought, I am going to pretend I know exactly what that is, you are in good company.

Most people do not.

Suet is the firm fat found around the kidneys and loins of a cow. When it is slowly rendered down, it becomes tallow.

That is it.

No weird mystery ingredient. No science-fiction skincare moment. No tiny lab-coated person handcrafting it under a full moon.

Just fat from a very specific part of the animal, rendered into something smooth, useful, and incredibly good at doing what a balm is supposed to do.

Not all beef fat is the same. Suet is firmer and denser than the softer fat you might see elsewhere on the animal. That is one reason it has been valued for generations, both in cooking and in traditional skincare. Once rendered, it creates a rich, stable base that works beautifully in a balm.

And before anyone gets nervous, no, we are not scooping something out of a cow and putting it straight into a jar.

The suet is carefully rendered and purified into tallow before it becomes part of anything we make. By the time it gets to Bare, it is a clean, smooth ingredient ready to become Barest, Remedy, Essential, Renew, or whatever else I am currently dreaming up in the kitchen.

At Bare, that suet is carefully rendered into the tallow that becomes the foundation of our products.

The reason I like talking about suet is because it makes the sourcing conversation more real.

When we say Bare is made with tallow, we are not talking about a vague ingredient that appears from nowhere. We are talking about something that begins with the animal, the farm, the diet, and the care that came before it.

Our suet comes from Brenneman Farms in Jay County, Indiana. Their cattle are raised on pasture from start to finish, and that matters to us because the suet becomes the foundation of our products.

The process is simple on purpose.

Good suet. Carefully rendered tallow. A short list of ingredients. Products made to be used, not admired from a shelf until they expire quietly behind seven other things you forgot you bought.

There is something nice about knowing what you are using.

Not in a way that makes skincare feel like homework. You do not need to memorize livestock anatomy before putting on a balm. But you should be able to ask what an ingredient is and get a normal answer.

So, there you go.

Suet is the firm beef fat around the kidneys and loins.

Tallow is what it becomes when rendered.

And at Bare, it is where everything starts.
