Does Tallow Smell Like Beef?

This is one of the first questions people ask.

Usually right after they hear that we make skincare from beef tallow.

And honestly, fair.

Nobody wants to open a jar of balm and feel like they just walked into a steakhouse.

The short answer is no, Bare should not smell like dinner.

Tallow does have a natural scent, because it is a real ingredient with an actual origin story. But raw suet is not what goes into the jar. It is carefully dry-rendered three times, without water, before it becomes the smooth tallow we use in our products.

That process matters.

The source matters too. The way the suet is handled matters. And yes, taking the time to render it three separate times matters.

The goal is not to turn tallow into something unrecognizable. The goal is to create a clean, smooth base that feels good to use and does not make you wonder whether you accidentally put roast beef on your face.

Our scented blends get their scent from essential oils or infused tallow, like vanilla-infused tallow. Nothing artificial or mystery-labeled.

And "unscented" does not always mean completely scentless.

For example, Undone Unscented skips essential oils but uses vanilla-infused tallow, so it has a soft natural vanilla character without an essential-oil blend. That is different from adding a perfume fragrance, and it is worth explaining clearly.

There is also something kind of nice about a product smelling like itself.

Not in a weird way. Not in a "let's make everything smell earthy" way. Just in a real way.

Bare is made from tallow, and tallow is a real ingredient. We are never going to pretend it came from a cloud. But we also take the process seriously enough that the final product feels like skincare, not a dare.

So no, it does not smell like beef.

And if it did, I would be the first person to tell you not to put it on your face.
